As I arrived in Atlanta, I had certain expectations regarding my time in the United States. But I didn’t foresee how great it turned out to be.

In fall ‘10, at the beginning of my first term at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, I had to adapt to a different academic system. I definitely appreciated the smaller course sizes and the problem-oriented learning, but some days I had to struggle with an excessive workload. However, especially during my second term in spring ’11, I really enjoyed the personal style of teaching at Georgia Tech. And I profited a lot from the side-projects that were offered in some courses. Being a student at Georgia Tech was definitely a change in pace from the German academic system. But I accepted the challenges, and the results were always rewarding.

And I really enjoyed the life around campus at Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech has a huge international community, I met people from all over the world. Moreover, there are student sports clubs for nearly every interest. I did race bicycles as a member of the Georgia Tech Cycling Club and actually won some races for my college. At the end of the term two club members and I did a mountain bike trip to some of the best locations in Colorado and Utah. I could never have foreseen that.
